On October 9, 1861, 20-year-old Horace Rice enlisted in Albany, New York. He was assigned to New York's 44th Infantry Regiment. They moved from Albany, New York to Washington D.C to defend the capital. They stayed in Washington, D.C until March 3, 1862. 

This map shows that Horace Rice left Albany New York and moved on to Washington D.C in 1861.
