The map belows shows Horace Rice's movements with the 44th New York Infantry during the year  1863.

After leaving the hospital, Horace Rice joined his unit as they camped at Falmouth. They departed  this area to participate in the Chancellorville Campaign on April 27th, 1863. On June 17th, they left the campaign to fight in the Battle of the Aldie. They also fought in the Battle of Middleburg and Upperville on June 21. They then headed up to Gettysburg to fight in the battle of Gettysburg on July 1st.

After the Battle of Gettysburg, they joined the Pursuit of Lee until they were assigned duty defending Warrenton, Beverly Ford and Culpepper on July 24th. They defended this area until October 1st, 1863. Horace's unit then joined the Bristoe Campaign until November 11th, 1863. Horace fought in the Battle at the Rappahanock Station before joining the Mine Run Campaign on November 26th, 1863. Finally his unit settled down in Beverly Ford for the winter.
