Medical Matters

Horace Rice was wounded by a gunshot on the first of July at the battle of Malvern Hill while fighting with the 44th New York Infantry. This was a gunshot wound to his left middle finger. For recovery, Horace was sent to USA General Hospital in David's Island, New York Harbor, where he stayed for four months.

Soon after being hospitalized for his gunshot wound, Horace contracted Typhoid Fever. Horace was then transfered to a hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, likely due to the disease. Horace was in the Philadelphia hospital from November of 1862 to March of 1863.

After contracting Typhoid, Horace had many chronic conditions stemming from the disease, including frequent colic flare-ups.

During the time he spent with the 44th New York Infantry, Horace was injured in the Battle of Malvern Hill. As you can see, this was the 44th’s bloodiest battle of the war. A total of 81 men were injured at Malvern Hill. Of those men, 10 died and 71 lived. Luckily, Horace was one of the survivors.
