The map belows shows Horace Rice's movements during 1862 with the 44th New York Infantry.

After leaving Washington D.C, his unit headed down to Manassas, Virginia. Here they advanced  on Manassas between March 1 and March 15, 1862. After advancing on Manassas, his unit traveled down the peninsula until they reached Yorktown. There they lay siege on Yorktown between April 5 and May 4th, 1862.

After leaving Yorktown they returned to Washington, D.C. Between May and July of 1862, his unit  participated in several different battles: the Battle of Hanover, the Battle of Mechanicsville, and  the Battle of Malvern Hill. During Malvern Hill, Horace Rice was injured by a gunshot wound to his left hand. He spent the next 9 months in the hospital before he rejoined his unit in April 1863.
