1865

The map below shows Horace Rice's movements with the 65th New York Infantry during the year 1865.

During the year 1865, Horace was mainly in the 65th New York Infantry. He began his journey with them on March 28, when he was drafted into the army at the beginning of the Appomattox Campaign (3/28/1865- 4/9/1865). This campaign included the assualt and fall of the Confederacy in the town of Petersburg, Virginia (4/2/1865) and the pursuit of General Robert E. Lee himself (4/3/1865). While chasing General Lee and his men, there was a battle at Sailor's Creek, an area right outside of Farmville, Virginia (4/6/1865).

From there, Horace and his unit went to Appomattox, Virginia and were present during Lee's surrender. After the surrender, Horace and the 65th were at Farmville and Burkesville until April 23rd. From April 23 to April 27 they marched to Danville, Virginia, where they remained until May 24. Then they began their March to Washington, D.C. where they had the Corps Review and then mustered out July 17, 1865.
