Horace's Pensions
During the war, Horace received a gunshot wound to the middle finger of his left hand. The wound made him eligible to receive pension, which he was awarded the day after he was discharged from service the first time, in October 1864. His pension rate was $2 per month.
Horace’s neighbor Charles Barnum worked with him in a warehouse in Hastings, Minnesota between 1869 and 1874. He said Horace complained of pain in his left hand and sometimes had to discontinue work because of it.
After Horace's death, his widow Maria applied for a widow's pension claim that would allow her to continue receiving her husband's pension. This document shows us that he was still receiving the $2-per-month pension at the time of his death.
